Challah French Toast (With Cinnamon)

Challah French Toast (With Cinnamon)

French toast is a premier breakfast meal, since it can be easily combined with toppings such as maple syrup or fruit spread. If you want to make French toast from scratch at home, try using challah bread! It tastes similar to brioche bread with its rich and spongy texture. It is also made from egg yolks and is a perfect complement to the toppings normally used for French toast. Many people dislike making their own toast at home simply because they make the mistake of using basic bread.

Challah bread vs other breads

As stated above, challah bread is very similar to brioche bread and gives the French toast a great kick in flavor. Its soft texture is very pleasing to the palate and also makes it more suitable for soaking with syrup.

Sourdough is a great alternative bread type to use. Even though it has a crispy hard crust, it makes up for it by having a chewy interior. It is healthier for you than traditional white bread thanks to its high fiber count and naturally occurring acids.

Overall, investing in delicious, spongy breads will net you far more value than standard supermarket loaves. White bread is starchy and does not taste as good as other breads when cooked golden-brown.

Challah bread is better tasting than most other breads when cooked.

This recipe will show you how to make challah French toast from scratch, whether you want to eat it in slices or sticks. To help give the toast a punch in quality, the recipe also guides you on how to coat the toast in cinnamon spice (which is optional). A generous dusting of powdered sugar and nutmeg at the end is more than enough to send your taste buds to heaven.

Equipment

  • 1 skillet
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 medium bowl
  • 1 whisk

Ingredients

  • 3 jumbo eggs or 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk any kind of milk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon spice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ground nutmeg
  • 4 slices challah bread, no more than an inch thick or brioche bread
  • powdered sugar
  • maple syrup
  • unsalted butter/cooking spray for the skillet

Instructions

  • Preheat a skillet on your stove to medium heat.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla until combined. You may choose to mix in the cinnamon as well, or coat the cinnamon manually by hand.
  • Soak the bread slices thoroughly in the egg mixture. If you choose to combine the cinnamon manually, pepper the cinnamon on a plate and coat the bread with it on all sides.
  • Repeat for each slice of challah bread. When ready, grease your skillet with unsalted butter/cooking spray and put in one slice of bread.
  • Cook one side for 2 minutes or until golden-brown. Flip the slice over with a small spatula and cook for another 2 minutes or until golden-brown.
  • Serve the toast on a dish and repeat with all toast slices until finished.
  • If you want to have French toast sticks, simply cut the bread into sticks with a knife.
  • Feel free to top the toast off with anything. Powdered sugar, maple syrup, and ground nutmeg are perfect toppings.

How to store your challah French toast

To store your toast, let it cook to room temperature before storing. I highly recommend you use parchment paper instead of plastic wrapping, since the latter makes your toast soggier.

Wrap your challah French toast slices in parchment paper with enough room between them. You may also use an airtight container. The French toast will last up to three days.

To freeze them, wrap the French toast in wax paper or aluminum foil and then store them in a heavy duty freezer bag. They may last up to a month this way.
