Equipment

  • 1 10-12 inch cooking skillet
  • 1 cheesecloth
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 boxed grater

Ingredients

  • 1-1.5 lbs russet potatoes or Yukon gold
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp oil or bacon grease olive oil preferred
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter optional
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat your skillet over medium heat on a stove.
  • Grate your potatoes into shreds with a boxed grater. Once done, transfer them to a cheesecloth and wring them out as dry as possible.
  • Clump your potatoes together and add onion powder, then stir to combine.
  • Lubricate your preheated skillet with oil/bacon grease. Use butter if you want as well.
  • Spread the potatoes out evenly in a thin layer. Cook for 4-6 minutes on one side. Make sure the finished side is not too dark, golden-brown is just right.
  • Sprinkle some salt, pepper, and any seasonings at this time.
  • Flip over the hash browns with a spatula. Cut the hash browns into slices before flipping if it is too big to flip.
  • Sprinkle additional salt, pepper, and seasonings on the second side. Add any additional ingredients if they need to be cooked with the hash browns, such as bacon bits.
  • Cook for 4-6 minutes or until golden-brown.
  • Remove and serve on a plate. Add additional toppings if you like.
